The short answer
The best streaming setup under £500 puts most of the budget into clear speech, flattering light and a reliable signal chain. This guide assumes you already own the PC or console, monitor, broadband connection and furniture.
For PC streaming, pair a close dynamic USB microphone with one soft key light and a controlled 1080p webcam. For console streaming, reserve part of the budget for a compatible capture card. For camera-off streaming, spend the camera allocation on audio, control and reliability.
On prices: stock and pricing move constantly in this category, so the figures below are percentage shares of your budget rather than fixed prices. Check the current cost of each item before committing to a basket.

What the £500 cap includes
It includes the microphone, stand or arm, lighting, camera where required, essential cables and the capture device for the console branch. It excludes the computer or console, display, games, broadband and desk.
Keep 5 to 10 per cent unallocated until the final basket is built. Adapters, longer cables and secure mounts are real parts of the system, not afterthoughts.
Basket 1: PC streamer
| Component | Target share | Current starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microphone and mount | 30–35% | Shure MV6, or a Samson Q2U to save budget | Voice is present throughout the stream |
| Key light | 20–25% | Elgato Key Light Neo or a soft desk panel | Improves every camera frame |
| Webcam | 25–35% | Elgato Facecam MK.2 or a lower-cost 1080p option | Controlled face-cam without mirrorless complexity |
| Cables and contingency | 10–15% | USB extension if needed; cable clips | Prevents a headline basket failing in the real room |
Choose the Facecam only when the basket still leaves enough for the light and mount. A cheaper 1080p webcam in good light is better than a premium webcam with a weak audio chain.
Basket 2: console streamer
| Component | Target share | Requirement | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Capture card | 25–35% | Current model compatible with console, display and computer | Moves gameplay into the streaming computer |
| Microphone and mount | 25–30% | Dynamic USB microphone | Reliable commentary without an XLR chain |
| Lighting | 15–20% | Compact key light | Lets a modest webcam look cleaner |
| Webcam and essentials | 20–30% | 1080p webcam, HDMI and USB allowance | Completes the compatible signal path |
Before buying, write the full route: console HDMI out to capture input, capture passthrough to display, USB to streaming computer, microphone and webcam to suitable ports. Confirm resolution, refresh rate, HDR and variable-refresh requirements rather than assuming every capture card passes every gaming mode.
Basket 3: camera-off streamer
| Component | Target share | Current starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microphone and arm | 40–50% | RØDE PodMic USB, Shure MV6 or a value hybrid | Audio becomes the main human connection |
| Monitoring and control | 15–25% | Wired headphones; simple control pad if justified | Prevents unnoticed audio problems |
| Network and USB reliability | 10–20% | Wired Ethernet; powered hub only if required | Reduces avoidable dropouts |
| Contingency | 15–20% | Cables, mounts and storage | Keeps the system dependable |
A camera-off streamer does not need to spend the missing webcam budget for the sake of reaching £500. Keep the money or use it only for a genuine workflow improvement.
Why this allocation works
Viewers hear the microphone even when gameplay is static or the camera is small. A close dynamic microphone therefore deserves more budget than decorative peripherals. Lighting improves almost any webcam. The camera comes after those two foundations.
Reliability is part of quality. A wired network connection, direct high-speed USB port and correct cable can have more value than a small improvement in image specification.
Component guidance
Audio
The Shure MV6 is the simplest desk option here. Choose a Samson Q2U pack when it creates meaningful room in the budget, or a RØDE PodMic USB when the basket supports both the microphone and a suitable arm.
Lighting
The Key Light Neo fits a small seated setup, but its maximum output depends on power. A correctly positioned lower-cost diffused panel can also work. Avoid RGB accent lights until the face has a usable key light.
Webcam
The Facecam MK.2 suits controlled 1080p60 use and has no built-in microphone. That is fine in this system. If it forces the basket over the cap, step down the camera before weakening the microphone or key light.
Capture card
Choose a current, independently supported capture card after confirming the console, target resolution, refresh rate, passthrough, HDR, computer operating system and required USB mode. Do not buy a generic marketplace capture dongle merely to meet the cap.
Port, power and cable checklist
- Count high-speed USB ports and identify which share bandwidth.
- Connect the capture card and high-data webcam directly where possible.
- Use a powered hub only when its power and data specifications are clear.
- Confirm the microphone cable reaches the real arm position.
- Use wired Ethernet when practical.
- Test the entire chain for at least one normal stream duration.
- Save an OBS profile and a local backup after stable configuration.
Upgrade order after launch
- Treat the most obvious audio or room problem.
- Improve the key light or its placement.
- Add network and USB reliability.
- Upgrade the camera only when the current image limits the content.
- Add convenience controls after the core signal chain is stable.

Frequently asked questions
Does £500 include the gaming PC or console?
No. This guide assumes you already own the computer or console, monitor, broadband and furniture.
Can I stream directly from a console?
Yes, but a capture card and computer provide more control over scenes, overlays and audio. Confirm what your platform supports before buying.
Do I need a 4K webcam?
Usually not for a small face-cam in a 1080p stream. Good light and stable 1080p60 are more valuable.
Should I buy a powered USB hub?
Only when you need more ports and can verify data bandwidth and power. High-data devices may work better connected directly.
