Resolution, and why the biggest number is rarely the right one
Resolution is printed largest on the box and is close to the least useful specification on it. Here is what each figure actually means, and what to do with that.

1080p
1920 by 1080. Still the resolution most video is watched at, and the one to use when you want the longest recording time and the smallest files. On modern cameras it is also where the highest frame rates live, so it is the slow-motion setting.
2.7K
2704 by 1520 or thereabouts. A middle ground that gives you a little room to crop without the file sizes of 4K. Increasingly skipped in favour of 4K.
4K
3840 by 2160. The sensible default for almost everyone. Enough resolution to crop and reframe, universally supported by editing software, and every camera on the market records it.
5.3K
5120 by 2880. GoPro’s flagship resolution. Useful mainly as headroom: shoot 5.3K, stabilise, crop and still deliver a clean 4K.
8K
7680 by 4320. Available on the DJI Osmo Action 6 and Insta360 Ace Pro 2 at 30 fps. Genuinely useful on 360 cameras, where the image is stretched across a sphere. On a conventional action camera it is mostly headroom.
Why resolution is not the answer
Three reasons. First, stabilisation works by cropping into the frame, so some of the resolution you paid for is spent smoothing the shot before you ever see it. Second, resolution is only as good as the sensor feeding it, and an 8K image from a small sensor in poor light looks worse than a 4K image from a large one. Third, higher resolutions generate heat and fill cards, and an action camera that stops recording because it is too hot has a resolution of zero.
The more useful question is frame rate. 4K at 60 fps lets you slow footage to half speed and still deliver in 4K, which is worth far more to most people than 8K at 30.
The setting to use
Shoot 4K at 60 fps unless you have a specific reason not to. It survives stabilisation, it slows down cleanly, it edits on any machine, and it is what almost everyone will watch it in.
Sensor size
The sensor is the surface that collects light, and its physical area sets how much of it can be gathered. This matters more than any other specification in an action camera, because action cameras spend their lives in exactly the conditions small sensors struggle with: under a helmet peak, in woodland, beneath water, at the end of the day.
The formats you will meet in this category, smallest first. A 1/1.9-inch sensor is what GoPro fits to the HERO13 Black. A 1/1.3-inch sensor appears in the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro, the Osmo Nano and the Insta360 Ace Pro 2. The Insta360 X5 uses two 1/1.28-inch sensors, one behind each lens. The largest currently fitted to a mainstream action camera is the 1/1.1-inch sensor in the DJI Osmo Action 6.
Those fractions are confusing by design. The important thing is the direction: a larger number after the slash means a smaller sensor. A 1/1.1-inch sensor is meaningfully larger than a 1/1.9-inch one, and the difference shows up as less noise in shadows, more detail in bright sky, and usable footage for perhaps an hour longer either side of the day.
Megapixels are not the same thing. A 27 MP stills mode on a small sensor divides the same amount of light into more pieces. It does not collect more of it.
Stabilisation, and the difference between levelling and lock
If resolution is the most oversold specification in this category, stabilisation is the most undersold. It is the single feature that decides whether footage is worth keeping, and it is where the three major manufacturers genuinely differ.
How it works, and what it costs
Action camera stabilisation is electronic rather than mechanical. The camera records a wider image than it shows you, then shifts the visible window frame by frame to cancel out movement. That is why the field of view narrows slightly when stabilisation is on: you are paying for smoothness in pixels.

Levelling is not lock
This distinction is the one worth learning. Horizon levelling corrects modest tilt, typically up to around 45 degrees, and gives up beyond that. Horizon lock holds the frame level through a full 360-degree rotation, so the camera can roll completely and the picture stays upright.
For anyone filming from a motorcycle, a bike, a board or anything that leans, lock is the feature and levelling is the consolation prize. It is also usually restricted to particular resolutions and frame rates, so check what you give up to enable it.
The brand names
HyperSmooth
GoPro. Version 6.0 on the HERO13 Black, with an AutoBoost mode that applies as much correction as the shot needs, and full 360-degree Horizon Lock. Long regarded as the reference in the category.
RockSteady
DJI. RockSteady 3.0 and 3.0+ on the current Osmo Action cameras, paired with HorizonBalancing for moderate tilt and HorizonSteady for full rotation.
FlowState
Insta360. Used across the Ace Pro and X series, and combined with 360-degree Horizon Lock on the X5. On 360 cameras the stabilisation happens after the fact, which is why it looks so stable.
What none of them fix
High-frequency vibration, such as a camera bolted directly to handlebars or an engine. Stabilisation smooths movement, it does not remove buzz. The answer there is a different mount, not a different camera.
Waterproofing
Two numbers matter and they are frequently confused: how deep the camera goes on its own, and how deep it goes inside a housing. Only the first one affects what you do casually.
Among current cameras, DJI rates the Osmo Action 6 and Osmo Action 5 Pro to 20 m with no case, Insta360 rates the X5 to 15 m and the Ace Pro 2 to 12 m, and GoPro rates the HERO13 Black to 10 m. With a dedicated housing the Osmo Action 6 is rated to 60 m. Those are the manufacturers’ published figures.

What the rating does not cover
A depth rating assumes still water. Jumping in, water-skiing or riding a wave forces water at the seals harder than standing at that depth would.
Salt water is corrosive and salt crystals wreck seals. Rinse the camera in fresh water after every sea session, with the doors closed, then dry it before opening them.
Moving a cold camera into warm humid air fogs the lens from the inside. Let it acclimatise with the battery door open, and use the sachets that come with dive housings.
Almost every water failure is a door that was not fully latched, or a hair or grain of sand across the seal. Check it every time, in that order.
One thing worth knowing
Depth ratings do not survive damage. A camera that has been dropped hard, or whose seal has been opened with sand on it, is no longer rated to anything in particular. Manufacturers exclude water damage from warranty cover for exactly this reason.
Battery life
Every runtime figure you will read is a laboratory measurement, and the conditions are always stated in small print: usually 1080p at 24 or 30 fps, stabilisation on, wi-fi off, screen off, in a warm room. DJI quotes 240 minutes for the Osmo Action 6 on that basis. Insta360 quotes up to 180 minutes for the Ace Pro 2. Neither describes a day of shooting 4K.
Shooting at 4K or above, with the screen on and wi-fi live, expect a substantial fraction of the quoted figure rather than the figure itself. Plan around three batteries rather than around one specification.

Cold weather
Lithium cells lose capacity as they get colder, and skiing is the use case where people are caught out most often. Carry spares in an inside pocket where body heat keeps them warm, and swap rather than trying to nurse one battery through a morning. A cold battery that has warmed up usually recovers most of its charge.
Charging and heat
A multi-battery charging hub is close to essential if you own more than two, because charging in the camera means the camera is not being used. Most current cameras also charge over USB-C from a power bank while recording, which is the practical answer for long static shots.
Heat is the other limit. Recording at high resolutions for long periods warms the camera until it stops to protect itself. Airflow helps, direct sun does not, and dropping from 4K/60 to 4K/30 usually buys a great deal of recording time.
Audio, the specification nobody reads
Viewers forgive mediocre pictures and switch off bad sound. On an action camera the built-in microphones are small, sealed behind a waterproof membrane and pointing in whatever direction the camera is, which is a difficult starting point.
Wind noise
Wind across a microphone port produces a roar that no amount of editing removes. Every manufacturer has a wind-reduction setting and all of them help a little. What helps a lot is a foam windscreen over the camera or a media case with one built in. On a motorcycle at speed, no built-in microphone survives, and the only real answer is a microphone somewhere else.

External microphones
Bluetooth microphones
Simple to pair and convenient, but compression and latency mean the quality ceiling is lower. Fine for talking to camera, weak for anything musical.
USB-C microphones
A wired microphone into the camera’s USB-C port, sometimes through a manufacturer adapter. Better quality than Bluetooth, and one more small part to lose.
Wireless microphone systems
A transmitter clipped to you and a receiver on the camera. The biggest single improvement available to a vlogger, and the reason interviews and pieces to camera sound professional.
Recording separately
A phone or recorder in a pocket, synced in the edit. Free if you already own one, and the fallback that always works.
Where the money goes furthest
If you appear in your own footage, a wireless microphone will improve your videos more than any camera upgrade at the same price. It is the cheapest quality jump available in this category.
Mounting systems
An action camera is only as good as where you can put it, and mounting is where GoPro’s long lead still shows. The two-pronged folding fingers that GoPro introduced have become the de facto standard, and most third-party mounts, and adapters for other brands, are built around them. If you already own a drawer of GoPro mounts, that is a real argument for staying with the system.

Chest mount
The most underrated mount in the category. Lower than a helmet, so it includes your hands and the bike or board in shot, and much less shaky than a handlebar. Start here for cycling and skiing.
Helmet mount
Top for a wide view, side for a compromise, chin for the most immersive angle on a motorcycle. Check your local rules and your helmet manufacturer’s guidance before drilling or bonding anything to a helmet.
Handlebar and frame mounts
Convenient and the worst for vibration, because you are clamping to the part of the bike that transmits every bump. Use a chest mount if the footage matters.
Suction mounts
For cars and smooth bodywork. Always use the safety tether. Suction fails without warning, usually at speed.
Adhesive mounts
Curved and flat pads for helmets and panels. Clean with alcohol, apply at room temperature and leave for a full day before use. Most adhesive failures are impatience.
Selfie sticks and tripods
The most-used accessory people do not buy first. On a 360 camera the stick vanishes from the footage entirely, which is how most impressive 360 shots are made.
Magnetic mounts
Quick-release systems that let you move a camera between positions in seconds. Convenient, and worth checking the holding force before trusting one at speed.
Accessories: what to buy with the camera
In the order they earn their place. The first three are not optional, and the total for them should be part of the purchase decision rather than an afterthought.

A fast microSD card
The one thing nobody should skip. High-resolution video needs sustained write speed, so look for a V30 or U3 rating, both of which guarantee a minimum sustained write of 30 MB per second. Buy from a retailer you trust, because counterfeit cards are common in this category and they fail exactly when you are filming.
Spare batteries
Two, minimum. Action camera batteries are small and cheap, and running out is the most common reason people come home without the shot. Buy the manufacturer’s own unless you are confident in the third party.
A charging hub
Charges two or three batteries in sequence from one cable while you use the camera. If you own three batteries, this is what makes owning three batteries useful.
Lens protection
A replaceable lens cover costs very little and a scratched lens ruins every frame afterwards. On 360 cameras this matters twice over, which is why the Insta360 X5’s replaceable lenses are a genuine advantage.
ND filters
Neutral density filters cut the light reaching a fixed-aperture camera so you can use a slower shutter and get natural motion blur rather than a stuttery, over-sharp look. On bright days this is the difference between amateur and cinematic footage.
A microphone
See the audio section. If you speak in your videos, this outranks everything below it and most things above it.
A case
Somewhere for the camera, batteries, cards and mounts to live together. The reason is not protection so much as that a kit which lives in one box actually gets taken out.
A power bank
For long static shots and for charging between locations. Most current cameras record while charging over USB-C.
Editing software
Every manufacturer bundles an app, and for a lot of people that is genuinely enough. The question is whether you want the camera to make the edit or whether you want to.
GoPro Quik
GoPro’s phone app. Automatic edits, highlight detection and straightforward trimming, plus cloud backup on a subscription. Good at turning a day’s clips into something watchable without you learning anything.
DJI Mimo
DJI’s app for the Osmo cameras. Handles transfer, basic editing and templates, and is where you change most camera settings comfortably.
Insta360 Studio and the Insta360 app
The most important of the bundled tools, because 360 footage has to be reframed before it can be watched at all. The AI reframing is genuinely good and it is a large part of what you are buying with an X5.
CapCut
Free, fast and built for social formats. The most common answer for anyone making short vertical video, and it runs on a phone.
DaVinci Resolve
A professional editor with a capable free version. Steep to learn, and the best colour tools available at any price. Worth it if you are grading footage rather than trimming it.
Adobe Premiere Pro
The industry standard on subscription. Deep integration with the rest of Adobe’s tools, and the right answer mainly if you already work in that ecosystem.
A practical order: start with the manufacturer’s app, move to CapCut when you want control over pacing, and only move to Resolve or Premiere when you find yourself fighting the simpler tools. Buying a professional editor first is the most common way people talk themselves out of editing at all.
Choosing by budget
Bands rather than prices, because action camera pricing moves constantly and previous-generation models are discounted hard. What matters is where the jumps in capability sit.
Around £100 to £200
Older flagships and current budget models. At this level you get usable 4K and basic stabilisation, and you give up sensor size, waterproof depth and any horizon lock worth the name. Buying a previous-generation camera from a major brand almost always beats buying a new one from a brand you have not heard of.
Around £250 to £400
Where most people should buy. Larger sensors, full horizon lock, waterproofing without a case and mature stabilisation all arrive here, along with the accessory ecosystems that make an action camera useful. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and GoPro HERO13 Black sit in this band.
Around £400 to £550
The current flagships. Bigger sensors again, better low-light processing, flip screens and, on the DJI Osmo Action 6, a variable aperture. The jump from mid range is real but smaller than the price gap suggests, and it shows most in poor light.
Around £550 and above
360 cameras, modular systems and multi-camera setups. You are buying a different way of filming rather than a better version of the same one. The Insta360 X5 lives here, as does anyone running two cameras for cutaways.
