Audio is the upgrade your audience notices first

People will happily watch footage that is soft, poorly exposed or shot on a phone. They will click away from bad sound within seconds, and they usually cannot tell you why — it registers as the video feeling amateur rather than as an audio problem specifically.
The encouraging part is that this is the cheapest problem to fix in the whole creator toolkit. A modest microphone in the right position transforms a recording far more than a camera upgrade at several times the cost.

If you read nothing else

Get the microphone closer to the source, and record somewhere with soft furnishings. Those two free changes will improve your sound more than most purchases under a few hundred pounds.

Microphone choice is almost entirely determined by how you record rather than by quality tiers. Match the type to your situation first; only then does the individual model matter.

Every recording passes through the same four stages. Problems introduced early cannot be repaired later, which is why the room matters more than the software.

The room

Hard surfaces reflect sound back at the microphone. Curtains, rugs, sofas and bookshelves absorb it. This stage is free to improve and impossible to fix afterwards.

Position

Distance from the source is the single most powerful variable you control. Closer means more voice and less room. Off-axis by a few degrees also reduces plosives.

The microphone

Type and polar pattern matter more than price. The right pattern in the right position beats a more expensive microphone used badly.

Level and processing

Record with headroom rather than as loud as possible. Gentle compression and a high-pass filter will do more than aggressive noise reduction, which usually makes voices sound underwater.

A free checklist before you buy anything

Work through these first. If your audio is still not good enough afterwards, then a purchase is justified, and you will know exactly what you need it to fix.
Halve the distance
Move the microphone or yourself. This alone often solves what people assume is an equipment problem.
Wear headphones while recording
You cannot fix a problem you cannot hear. Monitoring while you record is the fastest way to catch clothing rustle, clipping and interference.
Record away from hard surfaces
Move out of the kitchen. Avoid recording between two parallel bare walls, which is the worst possible geometry.
Leave headroom
Peaks that touch the top of the meter are unrecoverable. Aim comfortably below it and raise the level afterwards.
Turn off what hums
Fridges, fans, air conditioning, computer cooling. Listen to thirty seconds of silence in your room before you record and you will hear things you had stopped noticing.
Add soft furnishings
A rug, a throw over a hard chair, curtains rather than blinds. Free or nearly free, and more effective than most microphone upgrades.

Recording at a desk?

If you record seated, in one place, a USB or dynamic microphone plus better positioning usually solves the whole problem.

Getting the microphone closer to the speaker. Distance is the dominant variable in how much room sound and reverberation you pick up, and halving the distance improves things more than most equipment upgrades. A modest microphone close to your mouth beats an expensive one across the room, every time.
Only if you choose an XLR microphone. USB microphones connect directly to a computer and have the conversion built in, which is why they are the simpler starting point. XLR gives you a longer upgrade path and better long-term flexibility, at the cost of an extra box and more cables.
Wireless removes a cable, which matters enormously if you move around and not at all if you sit at a desk. It also introduces batteries, pairing and the possibility of interference. If you record seated in one place, wired is simpler, cheaper and more reliable.
It describes which directions a microphone listens to. Cardioid listens mainly forwards and is the sensible default for one person. Omnidirectional listens in all directions, which suits lavalier microphones and small groups. Supercardioid and shotgun patterns are narrower and are used to reject a noisy environment. It matters a great deal, more than most specifications on the box.
Not really, and this is the most common misunderstanding in creator audio. Echo comes from sound reflecting off hard surfaces, and a more sensitive microphone will simply capture those reflections more accurately. Soft furnishings, curtains, a rug and a closer microphone position will do more than any purchase.
Indoors, close, in a quiet, soft-furnished room it can be surprisingly serviceable. Outdoors, or more than an arm’s length away, it is not. Wind noise and room reflections are the two things phone microphones handle worst, and both are common in exactly the situations creators film in.
