It’s an easy thing to overlook when you’re buying an action camera or drone: the memory card matters almost as much as the camera itself. Use the wrong one and you’ll get dropped frames, recording errors, or in the worst case, corrupted files that cost you an entire day’s footage. Here’s how to actually choose the right one.
The speed ratings that matter
There are two rating systems worth understanding, and they’re not the same thing.
UHS Speed Class (U1/U3) tells you the minimum sustained write speed. For 4K video, you want U3, which guarantees at least 30MB/s sustained writes.
Video Speed Class (V30/V60/V90) is a newer, more specific rating aimed squarely at video recording. V30 covers the vast majority of consumer 4K recording. V60 and V90 only matter if your camera’s manual specifically calls for them: high-bitrate 8K, ProRes, or all-intra recording modes, for example. For mainstream GoPro and drone 4K footage, V30 is the number to look for, and paying extra for V60/V90 typically buys you nothing extra in practice.
One thing worth knowing: most action cameras and drones use the UHS-I interface, not UHS-II. That means expensive UHS-II V60/V90 cards often bring zero real-world benefit on these devices, and in at least one documented case (Insta360’s Luna Ultra), the manufacturer explicitly warns against using UHS-II cards at all. Faster isn’t automatically better. Matching your camera’s actual interface and requirements is what counts.
A2 rating: why it matters more than you’d think
Look for an A2 rating alongside your video speed class. This measures how well a card performs with lots of small random read/writes, rather than one long continuous write. It won’t dramatically change your video recording, but it noticeably improves companion app performance (browsing and transferring clips from your phone, for instance), which matters if you’re reviewing footage on the go while travelling.
How much capacity do you actually need?
As a rough guide, a 128GB card holds around four hours of 4K footage at 60fps for most modern action cameras. For a single day of stop-and-go shooting, 128GB is genuinely enough for most casual users. If you’re planning a longer trip without reliable access to backup your footage each night, stepping up to 256GB or 512GB reduces how often you need to swap cards, which is useful when you’re mid-adventure and don’t want to stop and manage storage.
For drones specifically, expect roughly 15-25 minutes of 4K/60fps footage per 128GB, so carrying two cards covers a longer flying session comfortably.

The honest bottom line
For almost everyone shooting 4K on a GoPro or consumer drone, a V30/U3/A2-rated card from a reputable brand is all you need. There’s no reason to pay for V60/V90 unless your specific camera manual demands it. Buy one size bigger than you think you’ll need, carry a spare, and format it in-camera before any big trip.
